No tax reference
HMRC is struggling to clear a backlog of work including setting up tax records for individuals who have registered for self-assessment. If you’ve registered recently it’s possible that you won’t be given your tax reference by the time it comes to pay what you owe for 2021/22 (31 January 2022). Tip. If you find yourself in that position, go to HMRC’s website, generate an online payslip and use your NI number as your tax reference (see The next step).
The next step
If you need to pay your 2021/22 self-assessment tax by 31 January 2022 but don’t have a payslip or tax reference, download the former from HMRC’s site and use your NI number as your reference.
