The Home Office extended the ability for right to work checks to continue on a virtual basis until 21 June 2021 when COVID-19 restrictions were due to be lifted (correct at the time of publication). The original plan was that in person right to work checks would have to recommence on 17 May. From 21st June you must carry out face-to-face and physical document checks. This means checking original documents or via the online service if the applicant has given you their “share code”.
The original plan to return to face-to-face document checking on 17 May was extended to 21 June. After that date employers must carry out face-to-face and physical document checks.
